Keynote address from Matt Cross: Restoration of Lake Sturgeon in the Maumee River

Join Matt Cross, Toledo Zoo Conservationist, as he discusses Toledo Zoo and their partner organizations efforts to restore Lake Sturgeon. This fall the planned release is for 3,000 lake sturgeon of which 1,300 were raised here in Toledo in a special river-side facility and 1,700 from a Wisconsin fishery site. It is more expensive to rear fingerlings in a streamside location rather than a hatchery. However, it is suspected that long-term success rates are increased. So, beside the restoration mission to this project, Matt explains that there is a research component, as well. “We are comparing survival, movement, and eventually return rates between the two stocking strategies. Results from the stocking events will be compared over time to determine the success of each strategy to share with other lake sturgeon restoration programs in the Great Lakes.”
