    Saturday, June 8
    * Red-breasted nuthatch – pine woods about 150 yards north of the intersection of Oak Openings Parkway and Wilkins Road
    * Blue grosbeak – two singing males near Horse Rider Center on Jeffers Road
    * PURPLE FINCH – singing (probably first-year, brown) male along Oak River Lane (about 150 yards west of Route 295). This may be a first Oak Openings (and local?) breeding season record since the early 1990’s!

    * Sora – 2 at Irwin Prairie where they are surprisingly scarce during the breeding season even when it remains wet
    * VIRGINIA RAIL – 1 at Irwin Prairie, my first-ever (surprisingly again) record of this species in the Oak Openings during the breeding season.
    * Wilson’s snipe – single calling bird at Irwin Prairie
    * NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL – calling bird just after 5am in woods a bit NW of the Horse Rider Center along Jeffers Road in OOPM; called for 20-30 seconds, high-pitched toots (There are a couple of OOPM breeding records, the most recent in 1978 with photos.)
    * Alder flycatcher – 2, along Whitehouse-Spencer Road just south of Old State Line Road and one along Schwamberger Road about 1/4 mile north of Old State Line Road
    * Yellow-throated warbler – singing male at Secor Metropark (where stream crosses Tupelo Drive)
    * Henslow’s sparrow – airport property adjacent to Route 20-A just west of Eber Road
    * Grasshopper sparrows – 5, two at Henslow’s sight and three more along mud lane that serves as a south extension of Degenfelder Road

    My bad…

The Louisiana waterthrushes, Black-throated green warbler, Blackburnian warbler, and Yellow-billed cuckoo were all seen EAST (not west) of Girdham Road.
